CORRECTION RE: AMD

A Few years back AMD downsized their staff.  This resulted in our loss of a sales rep.  Actually, our rep was laid off and we were told that our new rep was located in California.  We have never spoken to him and he has never returned any of our calls.  Needless to say, we are on our own when it comes to learning about AMD’s changes and advancements.  Their website is about as cumbersome as Microsoft so I rarely visit.  We depend on suppliers to give us the lowdown on what AMD is up to.

Over the past couple of months, we were told that XP processors are being phased out and Sempron will be replacing them.  We saw a short period where XP’s appeared to be going away but then they came back.  I have since done some homework and discovered that….I gave you all bad information.  I’m really sorry about this.  It has made me somewhat angry with AMD and our suppliers.

Sempron’s are not replacing XP’s.  They are more likely replacing Duron’s.  This sounds ridiculous as Duron’s have been out of production for over a year.  However, It appears that AMD is more interested in promoting the Athlon64 and the Opteron, the Athlon64 is a more likely candidate for replacing XP’s.  Sempron processors are limited to 333FSB and 256k of L2 cache.  There is a kicker with the Sempron’s.  All of these processors from 2400+ to 2800+ are socket A.  The 3100+ is a socket 754.  This information is almost non-existent on AMD’s website.

We apologize profusely for this bad info and hope it hasn’t caused anyone too much trouble.  I’ll take the heat for it.
